Response For Act 1, Scene 1 to Act 2, Scene 4
1. How does the play make you feel at this point? Record your emotional response in a few sentences and then explore them for a few minutes, trying to figure out why you feel as you do.
At this stage of the story, I felt so bored and emotionally stressed, because I didn't like it. What a boring and ridiculous story with nothing entertaining enough for me. I was dissatisfied with what I was seeing. I was disappointed with how weak William Shakespeare's ability to capture the tone of an audience other than his normal kind was.
2. In what situations have you felt similar to the characters? What persons, places, or ideas from your own experiences came to your mind while you were reading this portion of the play? Try to list at least three associations, but don't worry about trying to figure out why they came to mind.
A. The first situation i felt myself in was me being in the Esther play in 7th grade. I had joined the club that school year and played the leading role of King Xerxes. It reminded of the scene when I was in my palace talking angrily and fiercely after being betrayed by my own courts men. I felt a bit weak, but powerful at the same time while at this stage of the play. Maybe because i was relating myself to my performance. This was me being in the situation of Hamlet.
B. When Ophelia was badly treated and physically hurt by in Act 2, i also found myself being in another unwanted reminded situation. I felt like I was alone in a dark room with my hands tied behind my back. A white dirty cloth tied around my mouth and I, unable to speak. With one yellow dim light bulb turned on and nobody else in the room. I felt helpless and lonely. All hope gone that someone was going to rescue me. When I saw that scene, I felt damaged, destroyed, and tortured.
C. Finally, the last situation I could compare myself to was when there was the ghosts scene in the movie. It reminded me of the days when I was young and still a boy. it reminded me of the days when I had believed ghosts existed , kind of. It made me feel in a rough situation where you know you're undefinable against something invincible. It's invincible, because you cannot do anything to it. You cannot stop it or even touch it, literally. All you can do is pray. Praying works, but when you're too scared, it's hard to remember to pray.
3. What portions of Shakespeare's language attracts your attention? These might be individual words, phrases, lines, scenes, or images. Make note of whatever features draw your attention. Speculate for a few minutes about what you think they might mean.
I would like to wonder why they would the movie look so modern. They should try to show the past and the olden days. Then, why would everyone look like they live in 1990. Wearing waist high pants and modern day collared jackets and shirts. Things just didn't look right. that's what stood out for me and made me want to think about it more. Then, I thought to myself and answered my own question. Maybe because they are the royal family and most of the story at this point is being taken place in the palace where everyone is rich and gets the newest and latest clothes. Where everyone dresses a bit more fashionable and modern than their time because they are rich.
4. Make note of any portion of the play, its language, or events that cause you problems. Note any questions that you might ask.
If I could meet Shakespeare I would ask him why use such a language. I mean, it's so confusing. Nobody really cares what you say. they care how good the story of the play is.
